The Columbia community is mourning the loss of 18-year-old Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, who died following a violent overnight series of events that ended in a fatal deputy-involved shooting in Richland County.
According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, Deaver was identified as the individual who died during an incident that unfolded in the early hours of Thursday in the Summit Ridge Drive area. His death has left family members, friends, and members of the Columbia community in shock as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Authorities say the situation began shortly after midnight when deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 200 block of Sagamare Road. Although no injuries were reported at that initial location, investigators later discovered that bullets had struck a residence and several vehicles, suggesting a serious and escalating threat in the area.
Less than two hours later, deputies were called to another shooting in the 400 block of Spring Oak Drive, where another home had been struck. Officials believe the incidents are connected and began coordinating a larger response to identify those responsible.
During the investigation, K9 units tracked a scent through nearby neighborhoods, eventually leading deputies to a residence in the 300 block of Legend Oaks. As officers approached the home and issued commands, multiple individuals allegedly opened fire, prompting deputies to return fire. The exchange of gunfire continued until additional units secured the scene.
When the situation was brought under control, one person was found deceased, later identified as Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, while another individual was detained. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
